peach tree scale insect

A bad infestation of scale insect on a peach tree. Spray or scrub off the scale with a winter tar oil wash in December, and spray with insecticide or horticultural soap in summer (June/July) to kill off the young scale, known as crawlers, as they leave the mother scale in search of fresh wood to suck sap. Honeydew excreted by the scale encourages black sooty mould to develop, which in turn ruins fruit and can cause defoliation.
